To arrive in Crete…
Charter Flights
Operate to the airports of Heraklion, Chania and Sitia during the months of May to late October. There are many flight operators and by using the internet search engines you will find many offers from lots of operators in many countries. Many flight operators fly directly to Heraklion or to Chania or to Sitia in the summer months from many European cities.
Scheduled Flights
Operate all year round to the airports of Heraklion and Chania and Sitia via Athens. Aegean Air, Olympic Air and Sky Express both service the island of Crete with up to 5 daily flights from each company.
Ferry
All year round daily ferry service from Piraeus (Athens) to the ports of Heraklion and Souda (Chania). The boat for Heraklion, which is best for your destination of Makris Gialos, leaves Piraeus every night at 9pm and arrives at the Heraklion port at 6.30am. It is possible to pre-book cabins or big seats like airplane – or indeed just take your chances for a couple of hours sleep in the lounge areas!
To arrive in Makri Gialos...
From Heraklion...
From the central bus station in Heraklion you can choose one of the frequent daily routes that exist throughout the year.
The route is on the northern side of the island of Crete until you reach the town of Agios Nikolaos, there you may need to change buses (not always) and then head south with a stopover at Ierapetra, before reaching the famous Makris Gialos. The route is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours
From Chania....
From the central bus station in Chania you can choose one of the frequent daily routes that exist throughout the year.
The route runs along the northern side of the island of Crete, first passing through the city of Rethymno and then you will reach the city of Heraklion, there you will definitely need to change buses and continue the route exactly as described above "from Heraklion". .
From Sitia...
From the central bus station of Sitia you can choose one of the daily routes available throughout the year.
The route follows the road to the south side of the island of Crete and passing through some small villages, in a very short time we reach the beautiful Makris Gialos. The journey is about 30 minutes.
With a rental car...
The island of Crete has many rental cars that cover all the tastes of visitors... So you can rent a car, in any city of Crete and wherever you are, and it's very easy to come to Makri Gialos.
Several cars have a GPS navigation system and before you start you can set your destination "Makry Gialo" in which case they will drive you to us or if they don't have a GPS system you can ask the office where you will rent the car, to give you a detailed map of Crete and you can ask them to explain how to get to Makri Gialos.
